The Jimi Hendrix Experience - Are You Experienced - All Rights Reserved
For many, if you were to ask who the greatest guitarist in the world is, chances are Hendrix’s name would come up quickly.
While the notion of “greatest” is subjective and personal to each of us, it’s undeniable that young Jimi revolutionized the guitar world with his innovative sounds and wild playing style—especially when he famously set his guitar on fire at the Monterey concert.
But why did Hendrix become the legend we know today, and more importantly, what influence has this great guitarist had on me as a music lover?
Who’s Talking?
To give some context, I was 14 when I first started trying to play guitar. Learning was a bit irregular at first, but after a few months, I became completely hooked on the instrument, spending all my time mastering songs by my favorite bands of the time.
In the early 2000s, my style swung heavily between punk rock and grunge before I fell in love with the heavier and more technical sounds of hard rock and its many subgenres.
I kept hearing that Hendrix was a reference point in the guitar world, but compared to the typical 1980s guitar heroes I quickly became attached to, I felt a gap between Hendrix and players like Yngwie Malmsteen, whose virtuosity and classical style fascinated me.
And Yet…
Comparisons are always tricky, as they often pit “apples” against “oranges.” A few years later, I decided to understand why Hendrix commanded such recognition—even from guitar legends like Mr. Malmsteen—and I discovered this little gem.
Are You Experienced
Released in 1967, Are You Experienced emerged in a time of musical upheaval. Rock was evolving, techniques were becoming more refined, and Hendrix came onto the scene with a radically different approach to the guitar. His innovative technique and mind-blowing stage presence quickly earned him the admiration of his peers and audiences alike.
From the moment the album hit my player, I recognized the opener as a hit that kicks off with an irresistible and gripping note: Foxey Lady.
The international version of the album starts with this track, while the American version bursts into action with the iconic Purple Haze, one of Jimi’s most famous songs!
The flow continues with Manic Depression before reaching Red House, a slow blues number blending rootsy tones with all the artistry Jimi could channel. He added that wild, even “gypsy” touch that makes his style unique.
Every track is a joy to listen to without moderation: Can You See Me, I Don’t Live Today, and, for me, a special mention goes to May This Be Love, a soft, psychedelic ballad where the metaphor of the “waterfall” introduced at the beginning perfectly aligns with the song’s ambiance.
Not to forget the raw energy of Fire and finally, the album’s title track, delivering a hidden message: you’re not ready for what’s about to come.
Hendrix’s Legacy
Hendrix marked a decisive turning point in the world of guitar. His use of distortion, feedback, and effects that were revolutionary for the time opened up new possibilities, influencing countless artists.
Whether through his style or his unconventional approach, Hendrix inspired an entire generation of guitarists, as evidenced by this quote from Joe Satriani: “Hendrix liberated guitar playing, allowing everyone to push the boundaries of music.”
This album invites us to explore, to immerse ourselves in a universe where every track takes us to a unique atmosphere, reflecting an artist in perpetual pursuit of musical freedom. Discovering Are You Experienced is about embracing a philosophy that refuses limitations.
Conclusion
Choosing a Hendrix album wasn’t easy, especially when Electric Ladyland holds a special place in my heart for its even wilder and more experimental side. But Are You Experienced remains a unique gateway into the world of this exceptional guitarist—a world blending frenzy, gentleness, psychedelia, and introspection.
This album is not just a collection of songs; it embodies an entire musical philosophy, almost like a shamanic therapy. Whether you’re discovering Hendrix for the first time or rediscovering him years later, it’s impossible not to be touched by his atypical guitar playing and his voice, captivating in its own way.
So, whether you’re already a fan or experiencing Hendrix for the first time, this album has the power to touch anyone willing to be swept away by music.
